Overview: International Archaeology Day 2022, Oct. 15th

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

The IAD 2022 event, hosted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is shaping up to be the best in our eleven years of celebrating on the third Saturday of October. There has been an overwhelming response to requests for participation from lecturers, exhibitors, sponsors, and volunteers. This event is free for all thanks to funding from the State Historical Fund and several other sponsors.

Back in 2012, when it was only called “Archaeology Day”, Roxborough State Park put together a patio fair, walk and talk, and a few professional lectures. Within a few years, the event outgrew the park’s capacity to host the popular event. The concept evolved to an Expo with multiple agencies participating and several local archaeological and historical sites hosting local tours and activities. We’ve stuck with that approach and each year the quality of the exhibits, lectures, and site tours has improved and gained respect throughout the state.

And like all of us, we are emerging from the pandemic with cautious optimism. In 2022, we’re still holding the Expo and the local site tours outdoors. And we are strongly encouraging masks at the indoor professional lectures. But other than that, we are back in full force this year with an impressive website hosted by next year’s organizers, Community Connections, LLC. Sign up for lectures and site tours on the website. Bring your friends and families and join in the fun!

We have more exhibitors than ever offering demonstrations, hands-on activities, and conversations about local archaeology. There are exhibits, activities, and giveaways for adults and children. The local site tours are gearing up for your visits. And the list of professional lectures, geared toward students and adults, is impressive!

I’ll be highlighting our sites, lectures, exhibits, sponsors, and behind-the-scenes action in future blogs. As incentive to come back, sign up for a copy of our IAD 2022 poster signed by artist Elena Haverluk. The winner will be notified the second week of September.
