Welcome to the exciting world of International Archaeology Day (IAD), a global celebration born out of a passion for archaeology and the joy of discovery. Each October, the Archaeological Institute of America, alongside organizations worldwide, presents a diverse array of programs and activities for enthusiasts of all ages. From family-friendly archaeology fairs to guided tours, simulated digs, lectures, and classroom visits, IAD offers interactive, hands-on experiences that let you channel your inner Indiana Jones and Dora the Explorer.

For over a decade, Roxborough State Park (SP) was the proud host of a FREE IAD Fair and lecture, evolving from its inception in 2012 to a multi-agency event with multiple lecturers and coordinated site visits by 2018. A dedicated team of volunteers, led by Betsy Healey and Angel Tobin, nurtured the event, transforming it into the remarkable celebration it is today. In 2023, Community Connections, in collaboration with Colorado Preservation Inc (CPI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, took the reins, moving IAD to the breathtaking Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre.

With the support of a State Historic Fund grant through CPI and generous sponsorship, IAD at Red Rocks offers free admission to an outdoor extravaganza. Picture a day filled with engaging lectures, diverse exhibitors, food trucks, a beer garden, and ASL interpreters ensuring accessibility for all. Complimentary tours at auxiliary sites like CCC Camp by Red Rocks and Lamb Springs Archaeological Preserve provide deeper insights into archaeology and history. IAD is committed to inclusivity, actively fostering relationships with BIPOC partners, and welcoming more exhibitors each year.

In 2023, 36 organizations, 60+ volunteers, and over 1000 visitors participated in IAD, marking the beginning of a new era under the stewardship of Community Connections. The momentum continues into 2024, as we invite you to mark your calendars for International Archaeology Day on October 19th at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, Lower South Lot #2.
